Something wonderful has happened, something so unbelievably magical that no one even took notice. That is, almost no one.
Luckily, Postmedia columnist Michael Den Tandt was on the ball. He tells us in his latest column that Canadians all agree on matters of faith and morals, and that those things totally arenât up for debate anymore.
Across this country, from coast to coast to coast, there is now a nearly unanimous view that the old, divisive, angry debates about matters of individual faith and morals are over.
Thatâs good to hear. What else, Michael Den Tandt?
Discrimination based on race and gender and sexual orientation are history, too, for the most part.
Wow! Thatâs just super exciting. You mean discrimination just evaporated? Cool!
According to Den Tandt, we are now living in the âjust societyâ so many people have always dreamed of. Donât believe him? Well, he provides some âfacts on the groundâ to back up this mind-boggling set of claims.
Consider that the Wildrose Alliance didnât get elected in Alberta after two candidates said some weird shit about race and gay people. Or that Ontarioâs Conservatives didnât win the last provincial election after their leader said some impolitic things about foreigners. Or that a Conservative MPâs weaselly attempt to talk about abortion was shut down by everyone including the prime minister.
See? That means Canadians no longer care about issues of morality and no longer discriminate against anyone. Never mind that Den Tandtâs evidence consists of three political examples for a fundamentally social phenomenon.
Donât you get it, man? Some people didnât vote for a political party. Therefore, no social divisions in Canada. Stephen Harper didnât want to have to deal with abortion, a debate no one foresaw going anywhere anyway. Therefore, national consensus on everything!
The whole column is worth reading, if only for its jaw-dropping naiveté. Maybe there will even be a follow-up article, informing us that we all won the lottery at the same time.
