Focus groups are fantastic. They provide marketers with detailed feedback about new products before they are launched, helping to avoid expensive mistakes. They also let people express their stupidity in the safety of small groups.
CTV reports that the new Canadian $20 bill, unveiled last week, had to be sent back to the drawing board after initial designs proved too controversial. The new bill still has the Queen on one side, but the other now features a depiction of the Vimy Ridge Memorial in France.
Not recognizing the monument and its two distinctive columns, many people said the imagery of the Twin Towers was inappropriate. Which it would be, if the imagery had been of the Twin Towers.
The nude sculptures that are part of the memorial — representing hope, justice and peace — also rankled some people as too scandalous. The topless figures are absent from the final version of the bill as a result. Once again, a few prudes have ruined it for the rest of us who could have been looking at boobs every time we bought something. Curses!
