The Clio Awards are a real thing and exist outside of Mad Men. Hosted by Joan Rivers, the awards were given out in New York on Tuesday, with Chipotle winning a Grand Clio for “Back to the Start.” The ad shows an animated farmer regret his move toward factory farming overtop of a beautiful Willie Nelson cover of Coldplay’s “The Scientist.”
A Grand Clio is not guaranteed to be given out. There are gold, silver and bronze statues and less than one per cent of ads get a gold award. The judges can, at their discretion, give out a Grand Clio if something is truly outstanding.
