Just imagine not being able to watch this video. Sadly, that is the reality for as many as 250,000 Canadians who are still using dial-up.
The Canadian Press reports that five per cent of Canadians have no access to high-speed internet service, a number that climbs to 16 per cent in many rural areas. At the same time, most websites have stopped developing content with dial-up users in mind, including the Albatross. In fact, I’m so sure no dial-up users can browse this site comfortably that I’m going to say what we’re all thinking: People using dial-up are all assholes.
If you are someone who once had dial-up service, this information will make you despair a little for your fellow Canadians. It used to take hours to watch the shortest, most low-res of videos — and that was on the internet of the late ’90s and early 2000s. On today’s websites, it would take forever just to load the text.
Canadians, incidentally, spend more time online than anyone else, with an average of 45 hours per month spent online. The next closest countries are the United States and United Kingdom, with 38.6 and 35.4 hours online, respectively. We now know that that distinction is simply due to dial-up users loading a single porn video each week.
