Liam Neeson’s improbable career as an action star continues this summer with Taken 2 — now with even more taking!
If you haven’t seen the original, shame on you, but it centres on former CIA agent Bryan Mills trying to reconnect with his teenage daughter while his ex-wife Lenore, played by Famke Janssen, runs some major interference. Bryan reluctantly allows his daughter Kimmy to travel to France with a friend, where she is promptly abducted. Sorry, where she is promptly taken. The rest of the movie is about Mills wreaking havoc in Paris as he fights French bureaucrats, Albanian gangsters and virginity-obsessed Arabs. Luckily, Bryan manages to rescue his daughter minutes before an Arab sheikh deflowers her.
In Taken 2, his daughter and ex-wife (is she still his ex?) surprise Neeson’s character in Istanbul, because that’s such a brilliant idea. Meanwhile, all those Albanians he tortured, maimed and killed in the first film want revenge, and the best way to get it is to “take” Bryan’s ex-wife Lenore.
The rest of the film will presumably play out much like the first: the American CIA operative with the inexplicable Irish accent demands the gangsters return his ex-wife or he goes apeshit crazy; he goes apeshit crazy; some racist stuff happens, possibly involving Arabs wearing eyeliner; Liam Neeson tortures some people; Famke Janssen’s virginity is preserved.
Move over Avengers and Dark Knight Returns, because Taken 2 is the movie of the year decade universe!
