Bigfoot sighted picking berries in Quebec

Two women from northern Quebec claim to have encountered a mysterious beast while berry picking last weekend that was not unlike the legendary “bigfoot.”

According to the CBC, the two women first believed the mysterious form to be another human out enjoying the early autumn activity of berry gathering, but it quickly became apparent they were dealing with something else altogether. Maggie Cruikshank Qingalik, one of the berry pickers, from Akulivik, Que, told the CBC:

“We weren’t sure what it was first. It is not a human being, it was really tall, and kept coming towards our direction and we could tell it was not a human.”

Reports of “sasquatch and Bigfoot sightings in North America” are quite common, the report goes on to explain, citing some pseudo-science type from the International Cryptozoology Museum in Portland, Maine (whatever that is). In Europe, “legitimate” science types from Oxford University and Lausanne Museum of Zoology announced a groundbreaking new method of analyzing potential “Bigfoot” DNA earlier this year. According to what these Euro-science guys told the CBC, Bigfoot could well be a “distinct hominid species or a mix between homo sapiens and Neanderthals or other species.”

Fascination with “Bigfoot,” is a longstanding one, both culturally and “scientifically.” Cartoons, films, and popular songs have all dealt with the implications - real or imagined - of encountering our large-footed cousins in the wild. Living on the margins of the developed world and the wilds beyond, Bigfoot often acts as a romantic symbol or metaphor for all that was once wild in humanity, which has since been domesticated and civilized.

That science has not yet proven their existence should not deter us from ruthlessly pursuing even the vaguest specter of their being, forcing these humble creatures into the harsh light of the 21st century. If octopi are silently plotting against us in the darkest depths of the seas, I cannot imagine what Bigfoot is brewing up in the shadows of our northern hinterlands.
