Kids these days, I tell ya!
The British Columbia government is being criticised for its latest efforts to encourage youths to get off the couch and get a job. A new ad series put out by the B.C. Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training features catchy zingers such as “Hipster is not a full time job,” “Because marrying rich may not pan out,” and “Oh sure, you’ll definitely win the lottery.”
Many young people are finding the lines insulting and patronizing. Katie Marocchi, chairperson of the Canadian Federation of students in B.C., told Torstar news service she believes “these ads are offensive and in poor taste because they imply youths are just sitting around and not wanting to gain employment.”
However, as of publication of this story, true hipsters had yet to give a single fuck. One representative of the hipster community insisted it wasn’t that he didn’t have time it was just “you know… fuck it, right.”
The ad campaign which cost B.C. Taxpayers $604,000 (which would buy approximately one metric fuck-ton of Pabst Blue Ribbon) is intended to help curb the 14.7 per cent unemployment rate for kids between the ages of 15 and 24 but will probably just be something else for these slackers to make fun of while they get stoned and eat Cheetos. And why the hell not, if they don’t find themselves in real careers they can always get a job in government or, failing that, developing ad campaigns for the government.
