National treasure Grimes wins Webby for good music, internet savvy, all-around wonderfulness

Montreal artist Grimes aka Claire Boucher won the Webby artist of the year award for her “deep understanding of the Internet as not only a distribution platform for her music and art, but as a social tool to connect with fans through candid, meaningful dialogue.” Grimes released much of her early music online for free, and her 2012 album Visions gained widespread popular and critical acclaim. In addition, she penned some of the most scathing and incisive gender-focused criticism of the music industry, published on her Tumblr.

Justin Bieber won a People’s Voice award this year as well, but must have been too busy getting his girlfriend back to win the actual award.
