Slam poetry aside (which I say only because I do not like slam poetry), this video is pretty great. Dylan Garity explains his evolution from a nerdy, clammy-handed adolescent into an aware, rape-disliking grown man unafraid to acknowledge his own problematic former attitudes. As he says:
You cannot kill a monster until you are willing to see it in the mirror. Until you are willing to see its shape in your own skin.
It’s not that all guys are violent rapists, of course. (Studies point to most rapists being serial offenders, which means that while one in six women are raped, nowhere near one in six men are rapists.) It’s that viewing sex as something to be earned, at which point it’s unfair of a woman not to hand it over, is a very dangerous way to look at women and sex.
