At a Television Academy ceremony on Tuesday where six people were inducted into the TV Hall of Fame, Bill Maher had the honour (?) of introducing Jay Leno and defending his record as Tonight Show host.
According to Maher, critics who thought Leno acted like a giant piece of shit throughout the Conan-NBC debacle of 2010 or who just generally think his inoffensive brand of humour is boring are being unfair.
Via Deadline:
“Jay reminds me a little of Israel,” Maher continued. “He isn’t perfect but he’s held to standard I don’t think anybody in the world is expected to live up to but him,” he said, calling Leno “the most Machiavellian and also the most morally upright person I know in show business. He will hide in a closet but never needs a confessional booth.”
Pretty weird comparison, although I guess Jay Leno did occupy the Tonight Show for several decades against the objections of the international community.
