GWAR’s frontman is dead

Dave Brockie, the voice and one of the founding brains behind legendary thrash act GWAR, was reportedly found dead in his home in Richmond, Va., yesterday. Brockie was 50 years old.

Performing for 30 years, GWAR put on a show that you needed to see to believe. A disturbing yet hilarious spectacle involving aliens, monsters, blood, guts, goo and river carp delighted and shocked audiences around the world. Brockie, a.k.a. Oderus Urungus, will be sorely missed.

In 2011, GWAR’s guitar player Cory Smoot, a.k.a. Flattus Maximus, died after a performance in Minneapolis as the band prepared to cross the Canadian border into Manitoba.

For all those who witnessed Oderus at his most unchained, vile and depraved, along with his Scumdog brethren in GWAR, while our minds melted and our hearts pounded: thank you. Today the world is a darker and shittier place. RIP.
