Air travel may get slightly more intrusive if a Transport Canada proposal goes through giving airport security the power to break into your checked luggage if they deem it suspicious for any reason.
The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority already has the power to open checked luggage at the airport if they think it’s worth a second look, but current procedure requires them to track you down to open the bags. Barring that, they may get an airline representative who can break any locks or seals in order for security to root around your underwear.
This already seems like a lot of unnecessary leeway, but if Transport Canada has its way, CATSA agents will just be able to break locks at will if they think there’s anything suspicious on the X-ray, according to a notice on the Transport Canada website.
Best of all: “CATSA might not reimburse passengers for the cost of a broken lock.”
The proposal is still in the public consultation stage until April 14, so let the government know how you feel.
