Since Stephen Harper became Prime Minister in 2006, his government has emphasized a “tough on crime” agenda. It’s a counterintuitive approach for a country whose crime rate has been steadily falling since 1972, but it’s also a classic oldie for conservatives.

Of the 29 provincial jails in Ontario, 14 were overcrowded in 2012. With an average prison population at 98.5 per cent capacity, some jails were chronically overcrowded: Toronto Don Jail was at 117 per cent capacity last year, with five inmates per four beds. It has been over capacity for the last six years.
If you like pizza parties, prison may just be the place for you. That is until party-pooping Vic Toews gets his way. Turns out that prison is very similar to grade in the ’90s when Pizza Hut would throw your class a party for reading books. Except in prison it’s more like they just spend their own money and buy pizza.

Public Safety Minister and all around Nice Guy Vic Toews busted the balls of inmates across Canada today. As part of the Conservative government’s patented Tough on Crime agenda, Toews announced that inmates will be forced to pay more for their, ahem, “room and board.”
