The Graphics Interchange Format has been around since the late ’80s and, for a while, rendered entire swaths of the internet unnavigable (MySpace, Angelfire, et al.) but the GIF is making a comeback. The ability to share video snippets in a relatively small file has made it a hit on Tumblr, Reddit and elsewhere online. It was also chosen as this year’s word of the year by the Oxford American Dictionary.
