Pizza orgies, which were all the craze in Canada’s federal penitentiaries, came to an abrupt halt last year when public safety minister Vic Toews got wind of them. He ordered a stop to prisoners buying pizza with their own money and doing absolutely nothing wrong, because we can’t coddle criminals.
Rick Mercer’s latest rant for the Rick Mercer Report (aired yesterday) chastises Toews for his decision to stop the food runs, many of which also raised money for charity.
“If there are prisoners out there raising money for school lunch programs, that is coming dangerously close to contributing to society. God knows where that type of behaviour might end,” Mercer says. “Next thing you know they might start obeying laws.”
