The city of Regina, Saskatchewan loves to invent new, inane reasons to celebrate. There’s not much else to do in a province covered in snow for half the year — or more!
In that spirit, and in the spirit of white people being pretty great, Mayor Michael Fougere was happy to accept a request to issue a civic proclamation dedicating a week in October to “European heritage.” After all, European people have done some great things in Saskatchewan. Where’s their week?!
However, white people are not so great that Regina wants to celebrate their supremacy per se.
The mayor’s office decided to rescind the proclamation as soon as it realized that the organization responsible for the request, the not at all racist-sounding Nationalist Party of Canada, was a white supremacist organization. Unfortunately, that realization did not come until CKOM’s News Talk Radio was talking to Fougere and telling him about the NPC’s white supremacy.
“I thought this was very much an innocuous request to have a proclamation,” Fougere told News Talk Radio on August 20. He later added that his office was “hoodwinked on that one.”
Honest mistake, right? So honest, in fact, that Halifax and Victoria have also fallen victim to the NPC’s request.
